Today I started learning about several different activities that our librarian sponsors/advises for the school. First, she told me about the Black History Month activity that she sponsors. She looks through the books in her collection that relate to the topic and comes up with 5 challenging questions. She will generally ask a question a day for a week and if a student is able to give the correct answer and where they found it in the library they are entered into the drawing at the end of the week for a $100 Best Buy gift card.

We also discussed the district's new ordering procedure, which has severely hampered the libraries. The purchasing department changed how to order everything so that they have to approve each purchase. It works fine when the schools are ordering supplies because if they order $1000 worth of supplies, they will get $1000 worth of supplies. The thing that they didn't understand was that with libraries, you may order $5000 worth of books, but only get $3000 of that order. Purchasing is trying to streamline everybody's ordering by only going through certain companies, but this has just caused havoc for the libraries. We had a good discussion about this.
